There are a few moments, though few and far between, when I hear a beat and feel like I need to see a chiropractor from the heavy head nodding I’ve been doing. For some people, that head-nod is accompanied by a face like the one Jay-Z has in the studio with Timbaland in “Fade To Black”, where he looks like he’s pushin out a turd made of razor blades.
In hip hop, there were few truly consistent producers that made me feel that pain in my C1-C7 vertebrae, and the fallen soldier J Dilla was one of them. In honor of one of the greatest indie producers of all time, I present some of my favorite works by the former Ummah producer…..
“Players” by Slum Village from It’s Fantastic Vol.2 Quintessential J Dilla track. A soulful sample leads off the heavily filtered basslines, punchy kicks, and snappy hand-claps. Gotta love the not-clever-yet-loveable rhymes by T3: It's the seven eighty-eight DDT ‘em, just like Jake The Snake Actually, we don't participate But if you do then I'm a see you at your wake, (Players)
“Give It Up” from Jay Dee – Welcome 2 Detroit There are very few hip hop tracks that get as funky as the stuttering bass line in “Give It Up”. The sparse snappy drums just cement this track as one of his finest in my eyes……
“Fuck The Police” from Jay Dee - Fuck The Police 12” An anti-establishment song released on 12” only with the signature J Dilla drums and a flute loop that sounds like it came out of a 60s film about the Black Panthers. It even has Mumia on the cover!
Peep the hilarious video for “McNasty Filth” by Jaylib from Champion Sound. That off-beat horn stab smacked me in the face the first time I heard it, and from then on it never fell off my “Recently Played” list on my Ipod.

RIP-Jay Dilla. You will be missed by all of us.
Keith Murray-"The Rhyme" Instrumental (Jay Dee Remix)
The Pharcyde-"She Said" (Jay Dee Remix)
Busta Rhymes - "Turn Me Up Some" (Produced by Dilla). Even though I find it tough to sit through a Busta album (because he is so "in your face"), I am still excited for his upcoming record. Here is some info.
The Arcade Fire with Bowie here and here.
Good news for vinyl collectors.
The "Man" Elvis Costello at Joe's Pub on 2-20-06.
Interesting piece in the Village Voice on Lil Wayne.
Even though the Mobb is with G-Unit, I will still check out their new record. It was hilarious to hear former fans call out Hav and P on Hot97 a few weeks ago. "I know you ain't hatin on money!".
Production for Blood Money will come from Havoc, Dr. Dre, Alchemist and Sha Money XL. Here is the current track listing:
Cobra Clutch
Pearly Gates (w/ 50 Cent)
In Love With The Moula
Stole Something
Click Click
Creep
Capital P
The Infamous
I Got This (w/ Alchemist)
Talkin' Sideways
Nightmares
Put Them in Their Place
Get Down (w/ Lloyd Banks)
Flows Tighter
